We Media and much more

Finally worked my way through the very useful report We Media by Shayne Bowman and Chris Willis at the Media Center at the American Press Institute. A good overview of what they term participatory journalism, with many connections to my own research. From this report, several further references also need investigation:

  • Articles by Clay Shirky: The Music Business and the Big Flip, Broadcast Institutions, Community Values, and RIP THE CONSUMER, 1900-1999
  • More background information on blogging: Blogosphere: the emerging Media Ecosystem and The Tipping Blog: How Weblogs Can Turn an Idea into an Epidemic by John Hiler, Reputation Systems: Facilitating Trust in Internet Interactions by Paul Resnick et al. [PDF], and "Interactive Features of Online Newspapers" by Keith Kenney et al. in First Monday
  • A description of blogging as 'Random Acts of Journalism' by JD Lasica as well as the panel discussion "New Forms of Journalism: Weblogs, community news, self-publishing and more" with Lasica and others, and the useful Beginner's Guide to TrackBack at Movabletype
  • The book Unleashing the Ideavirus by Seth Godin
  • Some other useful links, on more or less related topics: Kaitiaki is a NZ-based open news site of sorts; Wi-Fi Networking News is interesting both as an open news site and for its content; and I've been meaning to keep an eye on the BBC's opening up of its archives in case there are some juicy archived shows emerging from this.

Phew.
